Thanks Steve! And, again, congratulations on the Navy head coach position!
Greetings from Phnom Penh! About three weeks ago, I arrived in Phnom Penh on a flight from the beautiful UNESCO Heritage city of Luang Prabang in Laos (post coming soon). I am still in Cambodia – love this country! Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and has a population of 2 million people, which is about 15 percent of the population of Cambodia (15 million). The city is strategically located along the banks of the confluence of the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap River.
The busiest part of the city is called “Riverside” and is located along the banks of the Tonle Sap River extending down to the Mekong River. Riverside is where most tourists stay and is chockfull of restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, and more. There are very nice hotels for $30 to $50 per night during the rainy season, which includes breakfast.
There are not many “tourist” sites in Phnom Penh, thus the city is a great place to observe the local culture and life and just relax and watch the world go by. However, in the way of my time spent engaging in “tourist” activities, I found the following to be extremely interesting and well worth my time:
Two great side trips from Phnom Penh include taking a boat up the Tonle Sap River to the city of Siem Reap, the gateway city to explore beautiful Angkor Wat and other ancient temples. The other side trip is to hire a car/driver ($50) or take a bus ($12) to the beach town of Sihanoukville, located in southernmost Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand. The drive is four hours long and passes through many small villages and gorgeous farming areas. I took a six-day trip to Sihanoukville via car. See my separate post for Sihanoukville by clicking here.
In addition to my photos that you have seen here, and a few more below, I will eventually feature a more extensive gallery of my photos of Phnom Penh in this post or a separate post. Stay tuned!
Also, if you scroll down to the very end of this post, there is an area to leave comments or ask me any questions that you may have. I would love to hear from you.
